HENGE ART: Sculptures & Watercolors

Explore the captivating Oamaru stone sculptures and watercolour paintings by New Zealand artist David Saunders

"My inspiration comes from the dynamic effect of the sun, and I use its magic wherever possible using hard and soft edges to create strong shadows on the stone. I use holes to maximise the effect of changing light conditions throughout the day, which brings each piece to life throughout the year."

My strong association with stone monuments in the UK has influenced the name ‘Henge Art’. As a young boy, I lived in Wiltshire in the days when you could climb on the stones and wander freely around Stonehenge. More recently, these memories were added to by being there with my family. The Henge connections exist here in New Zealand too, with Stonehenge Aotearoa being close by in the Wairarapa. I appreciate the important links with the sun, which also influences the design of my sculptures.

Watercolour painting is a voyage of rediscovery for me. Since moving to NZ I have neglected my pallet and brushes in favour of a mallet and chisel. Thanks to Watercolour New Zealand, my Oamaru sculpture now shares its place with watercolour painting.

This site contains information about my art, its creation, and who or what inspired me. I welcome feedback on both my work and this site.

Please contact me for commissions. We can discuss your requirements, ideas and needs, so that I can create something for you, with a personal meaning. I can also craft smaller work for fishing competition trophies, birthdays, and gifts.

Please browse through the range of images and visit my sculpture gallery to see some of my work. The pieces on display include some for sale. Work regularly flows out of my workshop and I usually have a selection of sculptures available for purchase. Each piece is unique and hand signed by me. Please email for current works available.
